I would like to use my iMac to control and purchase digital content - but my iMac is on the other side of the room. This is all relevant because I have half a mind to keep a huge AV server inside the cabinet, storing both my music (as discussed) and videos for viewing on the TV.

The TV will not use the B&O speakers, as I like to keep the audio and visual systems separate (so I can easily play music over muted TV, for example).

I should add that while I am using an iMac (and expect to stick to the iMac when the next one comes out), I run Windows on it - I guess there's good cross compatibility these days, but mention it just in case.Īlso, this is part of a bigger project - I'm custom building an AV cavinet, on which will sit the TV and B&O speakers. I did say I was relatively price insensitive, but £4.5k just for the system (since I have the speakers already) seems excessive - unless there's something seriously compelling about it? I'm not committed to SSD over Hard Drive, but would pay a little extra (though I know it's kind of unnecessary), as I like the idea of fewer moving parts, faster access (though perhaps barely perceptible in this case), and quieter, cooler performance. I'm now turned off the idea of iTunes servers on NAS, since they're unsupported and could become redundant overnight. Thanks, all, for the swift responses - v helpful. AN AE would be controllable from your Ipad You will still need a media player between the NAS and the speakers such as an Airport Express or your iMac. Again music streaming does not tax the drives so disk access noise would not be that high. If noise is an issue then just put the NAS somewhere you cannot here it or use low power green drives that are quieter. I did a search on SSD NAS boxes and could not find one that runs any iTunes compatible server as they are mostly used for corporate environments. I suppose you could build your own by getting a diskless NAS and adding SSD drives but you would need to check compatibility carefully to see if the drives are supported.

1000 CDs in lossless format would be around 500GB. You do not need a flash drive as music streaming does not require hi performance drives and the size needed for a music server would be expensive. There are quite a few NAS boxes that run iTunes as a server, though you should read this because as Apple do not make servers you are at risk when they change iTunes to a new version. Thanks for any help - don't know much about this stuff! I'm open to relaxing some of the above conditions, if the case is compelling, and am relatively price insensitive (I think!).

be physically standalone (wired only to the speakers) match or improve on the Beosound 3200's sound/output (not sure whether this is even an issue - the Beolabs are active)Ħ. stream radio (I guess iTunes does this anyway)ĥ. be always on (even when the other computers are off)Ĥ. be controllable via the iPad Remote appĢ. Continue to use iTunes on my iMac, but with the storage drive holding the library.ġ. My idea is this - dump the Beosound 3200, retain the speakers, replace the system with a storage drive (preferably flash), enough to hold, say, a thousand CDs sampled to Apple Lossless. I like iTunes, and I particularly like the Remote app on the iPad. Because of convenience/ease and downloads, I often end up listening to music instead on my iMac which doesn't sound great.

I love the look, size and quality of the speakers (no doubt many will disagree!), but am dissatisfied with the player itself for a few reasons - it only stores 396 CDs, new CDs take ages to copy to the drive, I like to download tracks, the display is very limited (few characters, and tiny, so unreadable from a distance), and the main issue - it's not easy to navigate the collection. The situation is this - I currently have a B&O system, the Beosound 3200 with Beolab 3 speakers. Hi, this is my first post, but I've been a lurker for years.
